Grounded in the USAID Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Strategy 2014–2025, the mission of USAID Advancing Nutrition is to improve the nutritional status and health of vulnerable populations around the globe.

USAID Advancing Nutrition envisions a world where countries, communities, and families are well nourished, resilient, and able to thrive.

To do this, we support nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive policies, programs, interventions, and systems that are or have the potential to be effective and sustainable. Our activities strengthen the enabling environment for these policies and programs and bolster their country-led scale-up.

USAID Advancing Nutrition follows these 8 guiding principles:

1. Support country-led policies and processes

Support country and community-led policies, strategies, and processes, partnering with a range of stakeholders.

2. Develop sustainable approaches

Help countries sustain nutrition improvements by focusing on country capacity development, systems strengthening, and cost-effective approaches.

3. Require accountability and transparency

Ensure full, accurate, and timely disclosure of information and communication on a regular basis.

4. Strive for equity

Commit to reaching both urban and rural populations, including low-income and hard-to-reach communities, regardless of gender, class, caste, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

5. Embrace gender equality and women's empowerment

Work with women and men, boys and girls to change attitudes, behaviors, roles, and responsibilities so that women and girls can fulfill their potential as equal members of society.

6. Focus on vulnerable groups

Target resources and programs to the most vulnerable populations, such as women of reproductive age, children in adversity, and those living in extreme poverty.

7. Promote resilience

Support programs and policies that help people, households, communities, countries, and systems mitigate, adapt to, and recover from shocks and stresses.
