Unhealthy diets are a leading risk factor for poor nutrition and health throughout the world. Responding to a need for global, regional, and national monitoring of characteristics and trends in diets, USAID Advancing Nutrition supported the Diet Quality Working Group of the WHO-UNICEF Technical Expert Advisory group on nutrition Monitoring (TEAM) in preparing for an online Technical Consultation on Measuring Healthy Diets in May 2021. The project provided technical and logistical support to convene over 80 nutrition experts from around the world.

The newly-released consultation report published by WHO, UNICEF, and FAO details three overarching topics:

  • global diet monitoring and prioritization of metric criteria and characteristics;
  • methods, tools and metrics to measure diets;
  • and definition and prioritization of next steps for identifying a global metric for monitoring of healthy diets.

This final consultation report will support moving the global community closer to identifying a set of common metrics  to monitor healthy diets around the world. Read more about USAID Advancing Nutrition’s work related to healthy diets
