This market assessment included a desk review and qualitative research with private sector and other actors. The aim was to improve USAID Nawiri’s understanding of nutritious food value chain dynamics and their functionality for household access. Specifically, the study explored: 1) barriers to more effective integration between producers, private-sector food processors, and vendors within these value chains; and 2) ways to enhance vulnerable households’ use of the market to purchase food products. The assessment found that households largely access staple foods from the market, and availability in local markets is limited by weak infrastructure, insecurity, little processing and value addition capacity, and little access to financial institutions, among other challenges.
