This implementation guide was originally developed to test USAID Nawiri’s approach to maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) in Samburu and Turkana. USAID Nawiri and the county departments of health had previously agreed on an adapted Baby-Friendly Community Initiative (BFCI) to improve MIYCN and care practices. The Nawiri and county technical teams selected mother-to-mother support groups, household visit/family meetings, and men inclusion. A human-centered design (HCD) approach was used to test this modification through short prototyping and recommend those to pilot. In addition, the teams identified key influencers for MIYCN and care practices: men, traditional birth attendants, community health volunteers, grandmothers, and mothers and fathers in-law. The guide focuses on four concepts for adapted MIYCN interventions: adapted mother to mother support groups, men-led MIYCN, practice-based learning, and an approach for identifying community champions.
