This brief summarizes USAID Nawiri’s activities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that were strategically integrated and layered to support safe, uninterrupted access to essential health and nutrition services, as well as markets for food, essential goods, and income. Key design elements of the food security and livelihoods interventions included co-designing hand-washing stations and working with central market committees to improve hygiene to meet government conditions for re-opening markets; working with the National Drought Management Authority to enhance market monitoring and information dissemination; and providing mentorship and grants to a network of women-run small businesses in Samburu to continue supplying food commodities, essential non-food items, and livestock to rural communities.
