This book chapter provides a comprehensive review of the literature linking iron deficiency to disability and death, including child mortality, perinatal mortality, maternal mortality, and mild mental retardation outcomes. The authors suggest that iron deficiency anemia contributes substantially to global death and disability, with a great majority of this disease burden deriving from anemia in pregnancy and early childhood and borne by women and children in Asia and Africa.
